Photographer Awarded $12 Million in Infringement Suit

Liz Ordonez-Dawes has been awarded over $12 million for copyright infringement. The suit alleged the defendants did not have permission or authority when they distributed seven of her images of high-end houses to third-party advertisers. Ordonez-Dawes had registered her images with the Copyright Office which allowed the court to award $150,000 per image, which adds up to $12,089,260 for damages and profits. The defendants never filed a response to the Amended Complaint, therefore this is a default judgement.
You can read all of the legal fine print of the case on attorney Carolyn E. Wright's Photo Attorney blog. Sounds like a good reason to register your images.
